Pueblo Human Relations Commission

HISTORY

Created in 2001, the Pueblo Human Relations Commission provides a means by which the City and County of Pueblo may officially encourage and bring about mutual understanding and respect for all persons of any race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, socio- economic status, physical or mental disability, marital or family status, and military or veteran status. The Commission works to guarantee equal rights for all as assured by the constitution and laws of the
State of Colorado and the
United States.

OBJECTIVES

Designed to enhance the Pueblo community’s ability to celebrate diversity, the Pueblo Human Relations Commission works on:

1. Encouraging mutual respect and under- standing within the Pueblo community

2. Serving as an authority and clearing- house through which citizens can convey their suggestions and/or receive information with respect to human relations

3. Advocating, mediating, and/or facilitating on Human Relations issues for individuals and agencies

4. Presenting educational opportunities on Human Relations matters

5. Advocating for equal access for

6. Encouraging citizen involvement in shaping our community

PROGRAMS

• Community meetings regarding local dropout rates and retention among students at Pueblo’s School Districts

• Community forums to address the relations between law enforcement and the community which have resulted in the revision of the police department’s taser policy

• Cultural diversity, gang activity, and housing workshops

• Facilitation of employment concerns with the City, County, and private employers

• Symposiums to address perceived issues of discrimination within the City and County of Pueblo

• Community forums on assistive technology devices for people with disabilities

• Mediation and conflict resolution services
